San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2009-09-07

San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2009-09-07--RHP Mat Latos was struggling so badly that the Padres have shut the 21-year-old rookie down for the rest of the season following Saturday night's outing in Los Angeles. Although Latos allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and five walks in just three innings in his final outing, the decision was based on the innings he pitched this season. After throwing 56 innings in each of his first two pro seasons, Latos (4-5, 4.62 ERA) worked 123 innings at three levels of the Padres organization this season. Over his first five major league starts, Latos was 4-1 with a 2.43 ERA. He averaged six innings a start and 15 pitches an inning. But over his last five starts, Latos was 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA and averaged less than 4 1/3 innings per start while throwing 20.25 pitches per inning.

--1B Adrian Gonzalez hit his 35th homer Sunday at Dodger Stadium. The homer was also his major league-leading homer on the road this season (23). He is now one homer shy of his career-best 36 homers hit last season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 103 -- Walks by Adrian Gonzalez this season, the highest total in the major leagues, but 29 shy of the Padres record of 132 set by Jack Clark in 1989.

13 -- Errors by rookie shortstop Everth Cabrera.

4 -- Errors total by the infielders on his flanks, three by 3B Kevin Kouzmanoff and one by 2B David Eckstein.
