San Diego Padres Notes, Quotes 2009-05-05
--1B Adrian Gonzalez went 0-for-4 Monday with three strikeouts and failed to reach base for the first time this season. Gonzalez entered the game as one of two major league players to have safely reached base in 25 straight games. Gonzalez was in a 2-for-15 slump with six strikeouts and had 28 strikeouts in 96 at-bats.

--RHPs Luke Gregerson and Duaner Sanchez, two key members of the Padres' bullpen, fell apart on the trip. Rookie Gregerson entered the trip with a 2.45 ERA. After four appearances on the road, his ERA was 5.40. He lost two games in a three-day span in Los Angeles and over his four appearances on the trip he allowed five runs on 13 hits in just 2 1/3 innings. The veteran Sanchez was 1-1 on the trip, but put a total of nine runners on base in 2 2/3 innings with two scoring.

--Sanchez and Gregerson are not alone when it comes to struggling in the Padres' bullpen. Padres relievers have given up 27 earned runs over 29 innings in the club's past nine games -- an ERA of 8.38 for a unit that had the major league's lowest bullpen ERA after the first 10 games of the season. Called up to lend aid this past week, left-hander Arturo Lopez gave up two runs on three hits and two walks in 1/3-inning covering two official appearances. Every Padres reliever gave up at least one run on the trip.

BY THE NUMBERS: 5 -- Straight losses by the Padres at the end of a 1-6 road trip to Colorado and Los Angeles.

2-11 -- The Padres' record over the last 13 games.

8.38 -- ERA of Padres bullpen over the last nine games (27 earned runs in 29 innings).

0-6 -- The Padres' record in the last six games started by staff aces Jake Peavy and Chris Young.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Plays come in all shapes and sizes. To win, you have to make plays." -- Padres manager Bud Black, on Thursday after a two-hop throw from RF Brian Giles bounced through the legs of C Nick Hundley and rolled past RHP Luke Gregerson, who was backing up the plate, to allow the decisive run to score for the Dodgers.
