San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-05-04

San Diego Padres Roster Report 2009-05-04
The Padres continue to carry eight relief pitchers while going with a four-man bench. On their seven-game road trip to Colorado and Los Angeles, the Padres used an average of three relievers a game.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Kevin Kouzmanoff was given Sunday off in Los Angeles. Kouzmanoff is 5-for-35 with 12 strikeouts in his last nine starts with his season batting average slipping to .237. Kouzmanoff has struck out 25 times in 93 at-bats while drawing only five walks for a .275 on-base percentage.

--RF Brian Giles continues to struggle at the plate. A solo homer in his final at-bat Sunday in Los Angeles was his first homer of the season and ended a 0-for-20 run. Padres manager Bud Black has been pulling out all stops to get Giles untracked, including giving him a day off last week, leading him off three times (for the first time this season) and batting him second once. Not only is Giles' average off 148 points from last year, his on-base percentage is .238 -- or 160 points below last year's final mark.

--CF Jody Gerut hit a homer late in Sunday's loss in Los Angeles to end a drought. Gerut had one hit in his previous 17 at-bats and is just 5-for-35 (with three hits coming in one game) since he was hitting .316 on April 21.

MEDICAL WATCH:

RHP Shawn Hill (right elbow inflammation) went on the 15-day disabled list April 25.

RHP Walter Silva (right forearm strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 14. Manager Bud Black said he likely would be out longer than the minimum time.

OF Cliff Floyd (inflamed right knee) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 5 with a right shoulder strain. He had recovered from the shoulder injury when the knee problem began.

RHP Cha Seung Baek (strained right forearm) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He threw a bullpen session April 21 and will throw another April 24. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Lake Elsinore on April 28.

INF Everth Cabrera (broken hamate bone in left hand) went on the 60-day disabled list April 20. He had surgery April 21, and he's expected to be out six to eight weeks before beginning an extended rehab assignment.

RHP Mike Adams (right shoulder surgery in October 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5.

RHP Mark Worrell (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 15-day disabled list April 2, and he was transferred to the 60-day DL on April 5. He is out for the season.
